- TBBS 2.3 New Feature List
- --------------------------
-
- ULEDIT:
-
- o 65,535 user limit removed. Now up to 4 million user accounts may
- be kept in your TBBS userlog.
-
- o "Public Account" flag allows overriding of the /U switch on MLTBBS
- for specified user IDs.
-
- o Template enhancements to allow turning Tags both OFF and ON.
-
- o Allows full editing of the Address and Country fields
-
- o Powerful scripted printing function allows making new user letters,
- mailing labels, extracting records to comma delimited formats for
- databases, etc.
-
-
- QAL:
-
- o CHANGE: command enhanced to allow changing many more fields.
-
- o QAL can now change languages and top level menu name.
-
- o SETSVY: command allows using different survey results files under
- QAL questionnaire control.
-
- o Can set the new %Rn% params to pass information back into a
- menu structure for use within TBBS.
-
-
- SDL:
-
- o Allows use of both SPACE and RETURN as active menu keys in the same
- menus.
-
- o RETURN is automatically active in a menu, but defaults to "next level
- help" function in any menu that has no KEY=^M entry.
-
-
- CEDIT:
-
- o Now allows specifying Temp file and Menu file directories explicitly
- for better management of RAM drives.
-
- o Allows specifying "slow drive" (CD-ROM) handling for both local and
- remote (LAN connected) drives. Remote staging methods may be set to
- be MFM compatible, COPYIT compatible, or TBBS's own method.
-
- o Networked mail areas (such as Internet email) may now be marked as
- such in CEDIT, letting TBBS know not to verify names as local, etc.
-
- o Enhanced modem setup allows multiple options for a single modem to
- handle things like various ROM versions, multiple interface speeds, etc.
-
- o Allows setting a minimum length for a password.
-
- o All TBBS 2.2 optional mods are now CEDIT configuration settings.
-
-
- MLTBBS:
-
- o RIP kit now standard internal part of TBBS. Fully backward compatible,
- but also enhanced for many new capabilities such as logon RIP polling,
- automatic command prefixing, etc.
-
- o Full Screen File Area interface. Allows tagging and downloading of
- batches, moving freely between areas of a FAR/DIR combination, tagging
- of the results of a search or new file listing, and much more. The
- most sophisticated and intuitive full screen file interface anywhere!
-
- o TYPE=14 is now a full screen tagging file maintenance utility. Tag
- groups of files and move them to another area with a single command.
- Make tagged lists visible or invisible, or delete them with a single
- command. Now TBBS has real internal file area maintenance capability!
-
- o Sophisticated IPX nameserver based LAN logins supported at no extra
- cost. TBBS lines may be designated as IPX lines and assigned logical
- names either individually or as groups. Multiple lines within a group
- form a "hunt group" for LAN access. Outbound service is also assigned
- by name for use with InterChange to access other TIPX clients on the LAN.
- This allows use of TIPX for access to TDOOR (remote door access) and
- IPAD in addition to any remote TIPX servers set up using the INT 14
- TIPX client/server software included.
-
- Included INT 14 driver allows workstation access via Generic BIOS, PS/2
- BIOS, EBIOS, or FOSSIL based communications programs. Full specifications
- of the TIPX protocol and source code for the INT 14 driver is included.
-
- o Enhanced modem handling:
-
- o DTR is lowered in the interrupt routine on loss of carrier, making it
- impossible for another caller to enter on the current session no matter
- what sort of software failure has occurred.
-
- o This also assures that "hung" systems will not answer the phone for
- callers which cannot be serviced, but will enter a "ring, no answer"
- mode.
-
- o TBBS detects the RING code and prevents spawning a task on a line that
- is ringing. This prevents outdial collisions due to the long answering
- sequences of high speed modems.
-
- o TBBS now allows the option of "passive answer", even though the need
- for it has been removed by the above modem handling improvements.
-
- o ALT-F3 will now take a TBBS system down, even if lines are hung due
- to hardware problems.
-
- o TBBS will not hang on external events if a modem or port has had a
- hardware failure.
-
- o Enhanced memory management allows more code and data to be placed in
- EMS. Multiple languages no longer can take more than 64k of the
- base 640k memory area, and all TBBS user data segments share the same
- 32k "footprint" as well. Much of the TBBS internal code has been made
- into "internal option modules" and shares the same 640k "footprint" that
- option module code does, reducing the TBBS code memory impact by over
- 100k in the 64k area. This improved memory use allows the addition
- of loadable device drivers (of which TIPX is the first example) and
- also allows option modules to use 33% more data memory than they could
- under TBBS 2.2, paving the way for larger TDBS programs, QSO handling
- PKZIP 2.x formats in the future.
-
- o 50% more efficient code for more capacity. TBBS 2.3 code executes
- 50% faster on the same power CPU as did TBBS 2.2, resulting in a
- significant feeling of "snappiness" by comparison. It also allows
- expansion of TBBS to 96 lines while retaining the same high performance
- TBBS has always been known for. This has moved TBBS into the realm
- where it requires an 80386 or better CPU, however, and TBBS 2.3 will
- NOT run on an 8088, 8086, 80186, or 80286 CPU.
-
- o Insertion params may now be part of menu text file name in curly
- brackets, allowing more dynamic reuse of menus.
-
- o Fully customizable "Read Message" entry prompt sequence. You may force
- answers to any of these incoming questions as you wish on a menu item
- level to construct the exact "feel" you want for your users.
-
- o New insertion parameters for more control of presentation, and enhanced
- the number of places they may be used. Examples: %RND% returns a
- random two digit text number from 00 to 99. Can be used to alter the
- selection of file names, etc. %MDMBPS% gives more resolution to the
- carrier speed of the caller (7,200, 12,000, 14,400, 28,800, etc.). New
- %R1% through %R9% "return" parameters allow passing of information from
- one menu to another, and also into and OUT OF QAL programs for more
- sophisticated system control. %LANG% returns the letter of the current
- language being used, %CANRIP% indicates if user is capable of RIP, %M0%
- returns the name of the menu being executed, and there are more...
-
- o Many, many "small but important" features. Some examples are:
-
- o /L:<file> and /NL:<file> switches on download menu commands to display
- <file> to the user before anything else gets displayed. This is
- particularly useful on raw downloads so that a text file is displayed
- instead of a raw directory format.
-
- o /N switch to type=12 command to tell TBBS NOT to clear screen before
- painting the next menu.
-
- o /X:abc on type=20 and type=2 commands to use an extension other than .TXT
-
- o /S:"subject" switch on TYPE=7, to allow forcing subject the same as
- /F:"name" forces who the message goes to.
-
- o CC: lists can include FidoNet mail addresses.
-
- o /LO in file areas has been extended to /LO[:n]. If :n is present,
- the user is logged off after a countdown of n seconds. They also
- have a chance to abort the logoff, or make it immediate.
-
- o /O on commands that use pseudo directories will list the name of the
- person who uploaded the file.
-
- o Messages may be submitted from a file, allowing many new capabilities
- such as new user messages and detailed generated confirmations.
-
- o Dropping carrier or timing out after uploading an enclosed file
- will now save the message automatically.
-
- o During display of {filename} files in a menu, the -More- prompt is
- now disabled.
-
- o Type=4 now allows more than 255 file areas in a .FAR file.
-
- o Many more "little things that mean a lot"...
